Yes. You need at least one independent witness who is over 18 and not related to you. Common choices include friends, coworkers, or neighbours. Traditionally two witnesses are used, and some organisations prefer to see two, so having two is recommended.

Can I use this deed poll to change my name on my passport?

Yes. HM Passport Office accepts deeds poll as evidence of a name change. However, HMPO also requires supporting evidence that you are using your new name, such as a bank statement, council tax bill, or driving licence in your new name. It is best to update these records first before applying for a new passport.

In Scotland, can I make and use a change of name deed?

Yes. A change of name deed made in Scotland or the rest of the UK is valid in Scotland as in the rest of the UK. While it is sometimes claimed that a change of name deed is not valid in Scotland, this is incorrect.

Do I need to enrol my deed poll?

No. Enrolling a deed poll at the Royal Courts of Justice is optional and not required for it to be legally valid. Most people do not enrol their deed poll. Enrolment makes the name change a matter of public record, which is not necessary and may not be desirable.

Do I need to use the Deed Poll Office?

No. You do not need to use the Deed Poll Office or any paid service to change your name. A deed poll you create and print yourself is just as legally valid as one from the Deed Poll Office, as long as it is correctly worded, signed, and witnessed.
